Dave’s Story

Site created on October 16, 2020

On Tuesday October 13th, Dave was in a serious car accident near his home.  He was taken by ambulance to Regions hospital emergency room.  Dave's injuries were assessed and found that he had broken his left humerus, left wrist, 5 ribs along with 4 fractures in his pelvis and damage to his celiac artery.  Dave was awake and aware of what was happening and had happened.  He was moved from the ER to the hospital that night with plans to do surgery on his pelvis, wrist and humerus on Wednesday.  Dave's blood pressure was low on Wednesday so it delayed his surgery a bit and once they proceed they decided to only do the pelvis repair.  Dave went into surgery for his pelvis around 1pm Wednesday afternoon and got out around 6pm.  His blood pressure was still low during the recovery in the ICU. While in the ICU Dave coded, the doctors had to perform CPR and were able to bring him back.  They suspected internal bleeding, did imaging and found bleeding from the surgery area and additionally from the gluteal artery.  They  returned to the O.R. to take care of the bleeding.  Dave was given several units of blood.  The orthopedic surgeon was able to stop the majority of the bleeding but there was one artery that wraps in front of the pelvic bone that they could not see.  A vascular team was called in to inject dye into Dave's bloodstream to find the exact location of the bleeding.  Once found they tied the artery off and placed two coils.  Dave came out of those procedures around 4am Thursday morning and the bleeding was under control.   Because he was stable our family was sent home to rest.  Dave was moved to the ICU to recover, later that morning sedation medications were stopped so he could wake up.  Dave has still yet to wake up.  A neurology team has been brought in and are currently running test to find out why the brain is still sleeping.  We thank everyone for the kind messages.  Keep praying for Dave!  We will try to update you all as more information comes in.
