Dan’s Story

Site created on February 25, 2021

Approximately 12 to13 years ago, doctors removed  a mass in my right lung. It turned out to be an aspergillosis fungal ball. Annual followups to check for further growth were conducted as it tends to reoccur. Unfortunately, my last CT scan in early February 2021 indicated a change in the size and make up of a mass in my right lung. On February 25, 2021, I had a broncoscopy and needle biopsy at M. D. Anderson. Full pathology will be back in a few days; however, cancer cells were found.  I have been told by one of my MDA doctors that if the tests show that I have cancer, that it is treatable.  I’m being setup with an MDA oncologist and expect my first visit to be in about a week.  This site has been setup so that friends and family can be kept up to date. Your prayers and words of encouragement will be appreciated.

Journal entry by Randy Lusby

In the predawn hours of Tuesday, October 5, typical of Dan’s consideration for others throughout his life, he allowed a much needed night of rest for all those in his attendance.  At 6:38 AM with family members standing close by, Dan Sherrill passed gently from us into God’s loving arms.  We believe the next words spoken were, “Welcome, my good and faithful servant.”

Robert Dan Sherrill was born in Vernon, Texas, to Bob and Edna Sherrill on June 17, 1939.  He lived near his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins and had many fond memories of Vernon and his lifelong friendships created there.

When Dan was 15, his father was named City Manager of Lufkin, Texas, so the family moved.  Here Dan quickly became involved at his new high school and served as class officer and Drum Major of the Panther Band as a Junior.  Soon Dan’s family would make another move; this time to Richardson, Texas, a city of 5000, in the fall of 1956.  This was Dan’s Senior year, and again he quickly became a member of the marching band where he had the opportunity to march in President Eisenhower’s inaugural parade in Washington, DC.

After high school Dan continued his education at SMU where he pledged Kappa Alpha fraternity.  He completed his college education at North Texas State University, graduating in 1962 with a BBA degree in marketing.

Following his graduation, Dan moved to Houston to work for Foley’s Department Store.  From there he was recruited by Southwestern Bell Telephone into the executive training program where he would eventually land in Huntsville, Texas, as District Manager.

In 1969 he made a career move to First Mortgage Company where he would serve in several capacities until 1982.  He later worked for Shanks, Tritter and Ledbetter until he founded Mason Creek Ventures.  Dan stayed here until he followed God’s calling into the ministry.

When Dan was 61, he became a local pastor for the United Methodist Church and was assigned to Holy Covenant United Methodist Church.  Dan enjoyed his “work” there and treasured his relationships along the way.  He, along with others, helped start several integral programs including the Child Development Center and Young at Heart.  He enjoyed preaching, teaching and leading many to Jesus Christ.  In his quiet and calm way, Dan lived his faith out loud.

In Dan’s “spare” time he was a board member for 21 years of Municipal Utility District 61 which serves Williamsburg Settlement.  He proudly held Katy High School football season tickets since 1987.  Every Wednesday since 2001 he attended the “Wednesday Morning Breakfast Club” with his long-time friends.

Dan is survived by his wife of 38 years, Suzanne, sons Mike (Annette); Steve (Dawn); beloved and embraced family:  Greg, Allison (Scott), and Steven (Brandi).  He was blessed with six grand children: Wesley, Nikolas, Reagan, Sam, Reed and Noah.  Dan had fond memories of accompanying each one on a trip to a destination of his or her choice.  He is also survived by his brother, Dick Sherrill (Linda), and their children, Lynn and Robin; cousins Charles Lebus and Webb Sherrill.  Dan was preceded in death by his first wife, Judy, and his parents, Bob and Edna Sherrill.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 16, 20221, at Holy Covenant United Methodist Church at 22111 Morton Road, Katy, Texas 77449.

For those that cannot attend in person, the service will be live streamed.  Please follow this link for live streaming:
