Dan’s Story

Site created on May 17, 2020

Hi Friends. My sis Kris created this page for my husband Dan and myself. On April 28th Dan had a small stroke. After 5 days in the hospital, he recovered completely and we went home relieved. The next night phase 2 began with another stroke and a brain bleed. 2 more weeks of ICU searching for cause and balancing treatment risks. Then on May 20th the culprit was finally found... A very rare bacteria causing an infection in his new aortic heart valve received last year. On May 21st Dan began phase 3 and underwent open heart surgery. He is slowly recovering in step-down ICU now. We are SO ready and hopeful for the HEALING stage to begin. So many prayers and so much supportive love have made ALL the difference. 2 weeks in, Kris and her fiance, Sandy, and my mom came to be with me and help. Their presence and support have enabled me to be with Dan all day every day. The greatest gift. Now they must depart home and this site will hopefully allow me to continue to accept help in caring for my pup, and me in some basic ways, until Dan can come home. And with him needing IV antibiotics and multiple types of therapy/rehab over the next 6+ weeks, any and all small favors will be a huge benefit. We will find our new rhythm but for now it's one day at a time. Thank you all for loving us. We love you!

Journal entry by Stef Swink Morrison

We are continuously deeply touched and just amazed at the incredible outpouring of love and generosity from so many of you! All of the dinners (from close by and even far away!) have been just wonderful and a gigantic help as we navigate the many doctor appointments and in-home therapist and nurse appointments. This week we had 8! (9 if you count our friend Melody who came and gave us both much needed and drastic change haircuts! Yay!!) Next week - 9 more appointments! Then the 1st 2 weeks in July Dan will get to finally be free of the last 2 tubes. Praise God! We literally could not have done it without the loving care of everyone. XOXO!!
