Newest Update

Journal entry by Danielle Gamboni

It has been quite a while since I last gave an update. You know what they say, no news is good news right?

The past 24 hours has been quite the whirlwind. Yesterday I was headed to an orthopedic appointment and had dropped Kyle off beforehand at my parent’s house as we were supposed to head to a Twins game after my appointment. On the way to the appointment, I kept mentioning to Kyle that I felt like I couldn’t see the road well and felt like something was off but didn’t think anything of it. Maybe just a smudged contact? I checked into my appointment and the nurse took me back and prepped me for the doctor. The doctor came in and first thing he says is “have your eyes always had one dilated pupil?” I looked at him and said “Ummmm no?!?”. He grabbed a mirror so I could see for myself. My pupil was huge. He asked me if I could see, and I said “Well not really” and he told me I needed to get to the emergency room right away. Bill drove Kyle to the doctor's office to pick me up and take me to the hospital. Meanwhile the orthopedic doctor called the hospital to let them know I was on my way and what was going on. I arrived at the hospital and before I was even done checking in they took me back.

They performed a neurological exam, light test, vison exam, chest x-ray, and decided that they needed and MRI of my head. Kyle and I waited anxiously for a very long time for the MRI. It was my very 1st MRI and it was actually quite scary. I especially didn’t like that I was alone in a machine with my thoughts for 45 minutes. Once that was over results were back within a half hour. All clear. Praise the Lord! I was referred out to a neuro-ophthalmologist and discharged from the hospital. Big sigh of relief. Good news is that my eye is back to normal size this morning, headache gone, and vison back to normal.

I share this story because the trauma that results from a cancer diagnosis never goes away. My family and I will always have it in the back of our minds. It is terrifying and something I never wish on anyone.

Overall, I am doing well otherwise. I do still have a lot of neuropathy/hand issues, muscle/bone issues in my knee and recently made a switch in hormones because my monthly injections have been giving me hives all over my eyes and face for the past few months.  The frequency of doctor appointments still feels like a lot but with each appointment I feel there are steps made in the right direction.

I hope everyone is well and enjoying their summer. It sure does fly by. Thank you to those that continue to send well wishes and prayers. My community of family and friends that care for me is humbling.
