A week has passed since Dan has been admitted for his stem cell transplant . Tomorrow marks a week since the transplant day . Right now he is going through the process of recovery of blood counts . This process is where the transplanted stem cells migrate from the blood stream to the bone marrow and begin to produce new white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. When your cell counts are normal they are considered as engrafted. You check for engraftment by looking at the blood counts . The 10-28 days following the stem cell infusion are critical since the chemotherapy has destroyed the body’s ability to fight infection . Until the transplanted cells find there way back to the bone marrow and begin producing normal blood cells, he is at risk of developing infection .
The past 3 days Dan has been very tired and not feeling well . He tries to walk and stay in a chair instead of laying in bed. His spirits are high for the most part, but he is bored and does not feel well. He is probably going to be in the downward phase for another 4-5 days, but after that will start feeling better each day when the blood cells recover. He has about another week and a half in the hospital .
Please continue your inspirational messages and get well wishes.
