Journal entry by Tracy Devine

Dan and I are slowly learning how our daily lives will now be different. While it's good to be home in familiar surroundings for Dan, I am learning how to juggle everyday life with not only my own duties, but Dan's also. I didn't realize how much work there is to do outside which Dan did for us!
We are going to Outpatient therapy in Sheboygan for PT, OT and ST twice a week. The other days we are busy here at home doing home therapy and keeping him motivated to improve. Dan's physical strength is improving every day. He struggles with the fine motor skills, but hopefully that will be restored. Therapy is very impressed with the movement he does have. I still have to make sure I am with him when he uses the bathroom, goes up the stairs, showers...his balance is still uneasy and his foot still drags. The fear of him falling is a constant concern.  Dan's biggest challenge is his communication. He understands what is asked of him, but to reply is still not there. His speaking in complete sentences comes out wrong with a miss-mash of words. It is very hard to understand what he is saying as it doesn't make sense. This is frustrating for both of us. We will be increasing his ST as this is the biggest challenge.  Dan does have an upcoming surgery to clean out the artery that is still blocked. We will have that scheduled after he undergoes a stress test in two weeks.  This surgery will take place back at St. Luke's and we will be there for two days. Hopefully this will happen within the next month.
I know we have a long road to get Dan back to where he once was and need to realize that he may have limitations for the rest of his life. I do know that I will continue to push him everyday to not give up and work hard to give him back a life we both will enjoy.
The continued support from family and friends is overwhelming and our hearts are filled with so much love for each and everyone who has been there for us during this journey.  At times I am so overwhelmed with sadness and stress that I think I am about to crumble. But I know the words of comfort and encouragement from a friend/my sisters/my children/my parents...This is what keeps me going and I find the inner strength to fight another day to give Dan back what was so cruelly taken away from him.
Please continue to keep Dan in your thoughts and prayers. He's a good man..and his happiness is everything to me.
I will update when we have more information with future surgery.  Again, THANK YOU for your continued love and support.   Tracy
