Dakota’s Story

Site created on January 20, 2020

Welcome to Dakota’s CaringBridge website. We are fine with you sharing this information but kindly ask that you do not post anything on social media.
Dakota was brought into Radys Children’s hospital on Jan 14, 2020 (her first birthday). Thanks to an amazing team of doctors, nurses and specialists along with top notch research and genetics testing we were able to discover a mutant gene that basically attacks Dakota’s kidneys. By the time we came in, she had 0% functioning in her kidneys and tested positive for RSV. This caused fluids to fill her lungs as well as extremely elevated blood pressure, lung collapse and her electrolytes were all over the place.
Luckily this amazing team was able to help a stabilize her and are working tirelessly to save her life.
For now she is on continuous dialysis and a breathing machine as well as completely sedated. We are still in the PICU.
We are using this to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting. And thank you for your love, prayers, positive thoughts, gifts and well wishes. It is working and she is getting stronger every day!!

Journal entry by Jen White

We are home! We were released last night. The kids were literally climbing the walls ready to go home. Dakota did wonderful throughout the day. They took her off the iv and we were able to watch her and make sure she could manage all her fluids well.
Last night we had a great pho dinner and a fun bath and loved sleeping in our own beds!
What a strange weekend get away but glad to be back and healthy.
Thank you all for your support and continuing to follow Dakota’s special journey. This isn’t an easy one but she does it with such grace that it inspires us all.
