Cydney’s Story

Site created on January 9, 2024

hi everyone! my name is cydney hutterer and i am a senior from lakeville south high school you don’t know me here is my story. i play tennis for lakeville south and during the season i was noticing some weird pain in my left arm, thinking i may have pulled something or torn something i put it off because it was my senior season. at my final match i noticed a weird lump on my left humerus and i went into the doctor the next day. i went in for an xray and they concluded that i had a mass on my arm. my doctor originally thought it may have been an ABC cyst ( aneuryal bone cyst) it is a type of benign cyst that is very common in athletes. my doctor then ordered an mri to be more certain and he found out the cyst had gotten so large it fractured my bone. although still thinking it was benign, there was always some abnormalities no one could figure out. he then sent me to an orthopedic oncologist to figure out my next steps for this cyst. my surgeon/ doctor concluded that it would be a good idea to go through with a surgery to remove the cyst in my arm. my surgery was scheduled and i went under anesthesia and my surgeon took a biopsy of the cyst to be certain it was benign and it came back inconclusive, meaning they could not continue with the surgery. they immediately stopped the surgery scratching their heads why the biopsy had come back inconclusive because the doctors were pretty sure that it was a benign cyst. We continued to wait for the biopsy to come back, but they kept telling us to wait longer. The pathologist were also not able to get a definite answer on what was in my arm, then they sent my cyst biopsy in to a cancer hospital in new york. the cancer doctor looked at my cyst also stumped but was ultimately confident that it was osteosarcoma (bone cancer) although still not 100% sure many doctors combined their thoughts and were able to conclude that so-called cyst in my arm was cancer. the reason it was so hard to get a definitive answer was because i am one of a handful of cases of what the biopsy turned out to be. the final diagnosis was osteosarcoma mixed with the abc cyst. we then met with my surgeon/doctor, and his immediate recommendation was to start chemo as soon as possible about a week after that call I went in for my first round of chemo and that’s where my story begins 😋

Newest Update

Journal entry by Cydney Hutterer

hey everyone! here is a quick little update. yesterday i had surgery to get my tumor removed. there were no complications and right now i am currently in the hospital recovering. they initially gave me a nerve block to make the healing process a bit easier, and during the surgery they cut out 4 inches of my upper arm. they then put a donor bone in and enforced my arm with titanium plates and 12 screws. overall everything is good and surgery couldn’t have gone better!
