Curry’s Story

Site created on May 28, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website.  We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.   We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.  Thank you for visiting.

Curry was admitted to Hilton Head Hospital on  Sunday, May 20, after being in and out of the ER for several days with acute pain in his knee.  What was initially thought to be arthritis is a staph infection called MRSA.  MRSA stands for Methicillin -Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus and is difficult to treat because it is resistant to most antibiotics.  The doctors at HH Hospital performed surgery on his knee to "wash out" the bacteria, however the MRSA has spread to his blood, meaning it can travel and manifest anywhere in the body.  He continues to be treated with vancomycin, the most effective antibiotic for treating this infection, and other medications.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of friends and family, Curry was transferred to MUSC in Charleston in the middle of the night on 5/26.  He is now being treated by a great team of doctors, most important of which are infectious disease specialists.  On 5/28 he had a successful second procedure on his knee to "wash out" the infection.  He is scheduled for an MRI tonight (5/29) to look at the metal rods in his back in case that could be the source of the infection.

At this point we are encouraged that his vitals have been and continue to be good.  He is, however, unable to have visitors or communicate in any other way.  Please feel free to leave messages here and we will read them to him.  Please keep him in your hearts.

Journal entry by Maryanne Murphey

Greetings to all who have shared Curry's journey.  At long last, he is going to go home on Tuesday, October 16!!!!  He is very eager to begin this new chapter and put the old one behind him. He will have Therapy, a CNA and private duty aids coming to his home regularly.  We are unsure of the duration for this, but it will certainly be for the forseeable future. He has a good medical team surrounding him and looks forward to seeing old friends. He may call on some of you for a little assistance now and then, and he welcomes your calls. Many of you have offered to help, and he is grateful for this. His neighbors, Bob and Robin, have been constant in cheering him on, and I know they will not be satisfied until they get Curry to the beach! Thanks to Peter, Eddie, Tim and Geoff and others who have been there all along, and to all of you who have kept in touch by sending your good wishes through this site or by communicating directly to him. Maybe the theme song is "The Long and Winding Road," but at last seeing the end of it is in his sights.   This is probably the last communication I will send.  Thank you for helping Curry through this, and for helping the rest of us to do it too.
With much love and gratitude,
Maryanne
