Journal entry by Janet Oh —
I have an update on my hand recovery. Unfortunately, the nerves to my hand have not shown any improvement which may signal a severed nerve at the root of the C9-T1. Two weeks ago the plan was to continue to wait and see if motor and sensation come back. However, my doctors suggest we go a different more aggressive route and perform surgery on my forearm on March 3rd, since the window of opportunity is closing soon. The doctor will splice the nerves to the working muscles activating my wrist movement and attach them to the unresponsive muscles that perform grip in the hand. The upside is this will allow me to hold and carry objects. The downside is that the recovery will be very long (12-24 months) and will not address fine motor function, sensation, or my pain issues. Yet, it’s a step in the right direction and gives me hope.
