Craig’s Story

Site created on May 31, 2018

Everyone knows that Craig has an enormous heart - it is what makes him an incredible husband, father, son, brother, friend and pediatrician.

In February, medical tests proved that this was also physiologically the case.  Craig has had a mitral valve regurge (heart murmur) for years which progressed and ruptured the anterior heart valve causing his heart to become significantly enlarged.   The good news is that surgery can repair the valve and since Craig has had no symptoms, his doctors felt that while surgery was necessary, it was not emergent.

We made the decision to schedule surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston on July 2nd, a few days after the boys go off to camp for the summer.  Since the surgery will be an open heart procedure, Craig will be in the hospital for the better part of a week and then home for another 6-8 weeks recovering.

We are using this site to keep family and friends updated in one place. The support and love we have already received is amazing - we are so grateful for our village of friends and families.

Journal entry by Rachel Mersky Woda

Craig was discharged from the hospital this morning and we have been home all afternoon.  Getting home was a little challenging with the torrential rain storm, but we made it, had lunch and a great nap!

We are thankful to still have our glider from when the boys were babies - it's Craig's new favorite chair.

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend and Shabbat Shalom!
