We haven't had much to update everyone on from the third cycle up until now; today that changes! On Monday I had a PET Scan to determine the progress of the chemotherapy. During our follow-up today with the oncologist we received some great news; it was confirmed that Betty and her friends are responding to the eviction notice. At the beginning of treatment, Betty, the left mediastinal mass, measured 10.1 x 8.3 cm. Betty now measures 6.4 x 3.2 cm; nearly ½ the original size!!!! The results from the PET scan also showed that the FDG avidity of the cancerous tissues, measured as SUV, had decreased from 34.2 to 6.7 - meaning that the cells are dying! There were several masses in the right mediastinal lymphnodes that also decreased in FDG avidity from 25.6 to 4.1. The mass in the right cervical (throat), previously an SUV 11.0, has also resolved. According to the doctor, they believe that the left vocal cord paralysis is temporary, and I shouldn't have any permanent damage. It will just take some time to regain my full voice and lung capacity.
We are now halfway through the journey and will continue to fight. I will have the 4th round of chemo on Thursday this week. We are hoping to keep control of the side effects of the chemo as we venture further into the treatment - feeling the healing! I can't begin to express how much everyone's prayers and positive vibes have made a difference thus far!! My family and I have received so much support; I wish I could figure out a way to say thank you!
All my love,
-Heather
