Cortney’s Story

Site created on May 22, 2023

Cortney's been a dedicated Department of Corrections employee for over 16 years, she started as a Corrections Officer and is currently a Career Case Worker. She has 4 children and a beautiful grand baby with another on the way!

Cortney was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on May 15th, 2023. She recently had a disc fusion and decompression performed on her neck that wasn't healing quite right that caused worry and then she experienced extreme weakness and shortness of breathe that led her going to the ER.

Cortney will be on an extended hospital stay while going through chemo treatment. Her oldest 3 kids are helping care for her 16 year old daughter.

Well wishes and prayers are welcome and appreciated during this tumultuous time.

Journal entry by Sabrina Porter

It's been just over 2 months in the hospital with mom now.

Mom's still on her 2nd round of chemo meds which seem to be working really well, and as of today will start a new treatment called plasmapheresis.

This will filter out antibodies from her blood that they think are attacking her platelets which is causing her low counts. As it was explain to us this is her last option to try and get these numbers up and hopefully be sent home. Previously an anti-rejection med was being used that would help temporarily but had to be stopped so her body didn't become dependent on it.

There will be 5 rounds of this treatment, one every other day. They'll be keeping an eye on her platelet counts, and fingers crossed this time a treatment will work for her.

On the personal side of things, I cannot thank mom's friends enough who showed up to help get her and her youngest moved upstairs. Laura, Liz and her husband Perry, and Amy were a much needed and greately appreciated blessing this last Saturday. They helped us get mom's life outside the hospital one step closer to normal. Thank you all so much ❤️
