As some of you may know a little over a week ago my mom was admitted into the ER for low hemoglobin. When seeking to find out where the blood was going they found colon cancer. Myself (Jess), my mom and Patty all attended a follow up appointment on 10/10/22 to discuss next steps and prognosis. The doctor stated she was in stage 4 colon cancer and the cancer has  metastasize meaning it has spread now to her liver creating bigger concerns. The treatment plan is not as clear cut as they hoped with bleeding ongoing in the colon. They are unable to even treat the liver cancer until they first treat the colon. What we have learned is the OR rooms are very booked and even in emergency cases like this it can take time. My mom is scheduled to have colon surgery on Thursday 10/13/22 (the day after her birthday). The time of surgery is TBD. The surgery is expected to be 3-4 hours long. They will be going into the right side of the colon and removing a large part of it where the cancer is. The doctor stated this might not get all of the cancer out of the colon but they have to start here before doing anything else. After if all goes the plan  is she will start chemo in a month. While that is going a team of doctors will meet to discuss how to then treat her liver and next steps.

CORALYN THURMER
Oct. 12, 1960-Sept. 28, 2023

Our beloved Coralyn ‘Corky’ Irene Thurmer, 62, of Blaine passed away on Sept. 28, 2023 at Mercy Hospital surrounded by her children, Patty, Jessie and Mike. She had valiantly battled stage 4 colon cancer since fall 2022. Corky will be remembered as an incredibly loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor, friend and confidant who touched the lives of everyone she met.

She was born on Oct. 12, 1960 to David and Kathleen Christensen, the fifth of six children, and graduated from Blaine High School in 1979. She wed Michael Thurmer and they lived in Idaho and Montana for many years. Corky absolutely loved working with kids as an education/bus para for Anoka-Hennepin School District #11; she learned from them and found it to be an honor.

Corky will be remembered as an avid Vikings fan. She was a social butterfly who was outgoing, accepting and kind to everyone she encountered. A role model to her children, Corky taught others to always look for the positive even in the most challenging of situations, to help others and always look out for one another. Her sense of humor and eagerness to experience everything life had to offer is something we can all take to heart and live by.

Surviving Corky are children: Patricia, Michael, and Jessica; grandchildren: Ava Ann Ash and Alayna Renee Thurmer; brothers Guy (Paulette) Christensen of East Bethel and Rande (Vickie) Christensen of Cambridge; sisters Julie (Dan) Bennett of Anoka and Kelly (Mike Swanson) Christensen of Roseville; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Corky joins those who have gone before her, including her parents, David (2006) and Kathleen (2020), sister Renee Bonnette (2019), and brother-in-law Claire “Buzz” Bonnette (2014).

Corky will be remembered on Friday, October 13, 5:30-8 p.m. at Sunset Grill and Bar: 8466 MN-65, Spring Lake Park, MN 55432 (one day after her 63rd birthday). Speeches and story sharing will begin around 6pm and dinner to follow. We look forward to seeing everyone, those that would like to share a story/memory are more than welcomed to. She wanted as many stories shared as possible! The family is accepting donations for medical and memorial expenses, www.gofundme.com/f/coralyn-corky-thurmer.
