Journal entry by Michael Negron

It’s been nearly six months since Coral Negron’s surgery.  Her surgeon at the 🧠 👀 🍕 Malnati Brain Tumor Institute at Northwestern removed all of the tumor visible on her MRIs and she followed up with 6 weeks of daily radiation treatment and chemotherapy pills.

Coral emerged from this round of treatment with half of her hair gone but thankfully limited other side effects.

After a month off, she commenced a 6 month period where she takes a double dose of the chemo for 5 days, followed by 23 days off and, if her blood work looks good, she starts another 5-day treatment period.  She wrapped up her 2nd of these 5-day periods last week, meaning she is about one-third of the way through this treatment period.  Side effects were worse the second round, with quite a bit of nausea (and a little barfing).

Having these side effects only a third of the way through may not bode well for the next 4 rounds, but we are optimistic that earlier use of stronger anti-nausea meds will help.  Meanwhile we are seeing signs of hair slowly growing back as she is now sporting a five o’clock shadow on about 2/3 of her bald spots, so we are hoping that is a good sign that most of her hair will grow back fully in a few years.
