Conni’s Story

Site created on February 10, 2022

Conni was diagnosed in May 2021 with mucosal melanoma. Sadly, it has progressed very rapidly, and her journey has been very hard. She had major surgery at the beginning of summer 2021, which we all hoped was going to slow the progression of the cancer. Unfortunately, it did not. She developed several other nodules the doctors monitored closely. In late November, a brain tumor was detected. After an alarming change in Conni's speech and mannerisms, Sam rushed Conni to Urgent Care, where a brain bleed was detected. She very quickly underwent brain surgery to get the bleed under control and remove the tumor if possible. The surgery was a success, and her family and friends all took a huge breath of relief. But the cancer had other plans, and continues to ravage our Lovely Conni. After her recent visit to Urgent Care, she and Sam have decided to begin hospice care, and is finishing strong at home. "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God". Hebrews 12:1-3.
We appreciate your prayers, thoughts, and concern through this challenging time. Please feel welcome to leave Conni and Sam prayers, stories and encouragement here on this site. May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Journal entry by Kristi Baker

We wanted to take a final moment to thank you for attending Conni's Celebration of Life in Florida and in Ohio, either in-person, virtually, or in spirit. We were deeply touched by the huge outpouring of love and support that surrounded the family on those days, and all the days before and after. Saying goodbye is never easy; knowing just how much Conni touched and impacted so many, though, made the days even more beautiful and memorable. Thank you to those who followed Conni's journey, for all the prayers, the heartfelt tributes, and the caring gestures. They meant and continue to mean so much to all of us, especially her Sam.

Special thanks to Pastors Jayne and Gary Rideout and Brian Donahue; your words spoke to Conni's true nature and presence. We also want to thank everyone who donated to Family Promise and to the St. Andrew's Food Pantry in Conni's memory. Donations to both organizations were in the thousands of dollars, and will help continue Conni's legacy of love and kindness. (Sam sent a thank you note to all those he knew made a contribution - he sure hopes he didn't miss anyone! He appreciates these acts so very much. 😊)

Conni was such a beautiful and special person to so many; the ripples of her love, her reach, and her lasting impact will live on through so many of us. Conni will always hold a special place in our hearts. Rest easy, my friend.
