A Note from Conner:

Over the past year I have refrained from posting anything about my personal health. It was completely a personal thing, I prefer to deal with these things as quietly and stoically as possible.

Now that I’ve returned to my normal life, I thought I should post at least once. I don’t have the words to express my deep gratitude to my incredible group of co-workers, friends and family who, forgiving my many faults, supported me through this entire journey. I have some truly amazing people in my life. I also want to express my heartfelt thanks to all those who sent their prayers, it meant the world to me.

Before this past year, I always felt like one of the lucky ones. Towards the end of college I began to feel like I could have anything I wanted, like my dreams were slowly coming true and that everything was going according to plan.

Today, I feel a completely different sort of luck. Not for the return of my health, because I know that could change in an instant. I feel lucky to have been treated by some of the kindest, most brilliant group of Doctors, Nurses and healthcare providers any human being could ask for. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to be able to experience the unwavering love of my friends and family. I feel lucky to have gained the memory and strength of ordeals endured.

After the most intense part of my treatment a friend and executive at Mayo Clinic asked me to catch up over dinner. A day after we met, she insisted that I needed to tell my story to the Mayo Public Affairs team. Together they created this short story detailing some of my experiences.
