Colleen’s Story

Site created on June 19, 2023

While working out Saturday morning (6/17/23) Colleen suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. Thanks to the quick response of her gym and first responders, Colleen was able to be transported to Atrium Health (Wake Forest Baptist to locals) and receive the medical care she needed to help stop that bleed.

While we are so thankful Colleen is in such great physical shape going into this event, we expect recovery to be more of a marathon than a spirit.

We will post updates to this site as they become available to make sure everyone receives the information and Sean can focus as much attention as possible on Colleen.  Thank you for your continued prayers for Colleen, the family, and all of those involved in her recovery.

It is our prayer that a year from now we will all be able to look back on how God has used her recovery to glory his kingdom, and how we will we celebrate!

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.
— Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)

Journal entry by Sean Bennett

Good evening, Friends!

I like stringing good days together in-a-row!!

  • Colleen started her day with a Speech Therapy session in which she had to follow the directions for a garden plot (pic). She's certainly getting lots of brain stimulation to help lift her brain fog.
  • In the afternoon, Colleen had her usual PT session. She started with a lap around the house and then moved right to the massage table to get her hamstrings and quads stretched. To stretch her quads, she paid on her belly and her knees were pulled back so her heels got close to her butt. To get off the table, she did another strict push up just like she did after her massage last week. From there, her PT had her get on all 4s to work and stretch some different muscles (pics). More exercises and stretches to add to the repertoire!!!! She did GREAT with these, by the way.
  • They next moved to the counter where Colleen went straight to Quadrant Stepping. Her accuracy with for placement continues to improve! Tug-A-Colleen was next...and considering the extra and new muscle work that was done at the table, she did really well!!
  • The rest of the evening was spent out on the deck enjoying a peaceful evening with the birds and squirrels.
  • Just a reminder that Colleen is available for outings in the evenings and on the weekends. THIS WOULD BE SUPER HELPFUL because she is REALLY getting antsy and wanting to do more!! Just reach out and we'll get it on the calendar!
  • May is completely wide open on Meal Train, if anyone is interested. Meal Train is available under the "Ways to Help" tab. Thank you in advance!
  • Please pray for my teacher friend, Bill. He hit a deer recently while riding his motorcycle on his way to church. He is back at school teaching 3 days each week...for now. It was very encouraging seeing him last week!!
  • Please pray for my friend Justin who has been dealing with some stress that is beginning to effect his health....as well as Marie, who has some damage to her knee. MARIE'S KNEE SURGERY IS TOMORROW (4/30) so please pray for successful repair. Thank you.
  • My friend Carolyn's device was activated recently and it seems to be working as her tremors have been reduced. Please pray for her and her family for healing and comfort so that her tremors will be a thing of the past. Thank you.
  • It had been just over a year since my friend Chip's initial aneurysm surgery. Currently, there hasn't been much forward progress but they're hasn't been anything negative either!! Please continue to pray for him and his family.
  • Please continue to pray for Colleen's left shoulder, her chronic sore leg muscles from working them so hard, her complete restoration of voluntary nervous function, the complete ability to communicate as well as she once did, her short term memory, and sense of time. Please pray that her "fog" continues to dissipate...and sooner rather than later. Additionally, please pray for my friend Kelly with vertigo, my former student (Ryon), my friend (Chip), my colleague's father (Steward), my friend's nephew (Connor), Johnetta Forbes, and a different friend's wife who is battling cancer. Thank you.
