Cole’s Story

Site created on April 20, 2019

Our friends and family,

Cole came to the emergency room at the University of Washington hospital on April 15th. We were so pleased that for the first time he called 911 instead of taking an Uber.

Cole is in the ICU due to serious pneumonia and an infection around his one and only lung. Thank goodness they’ve kept him sedated so he isn’t aware of what’s going on.

We know Cole is a fighter. And this will be the hardest battle he’s had since he was young. Today, April 20, is day six, and while he isn’t out of the woods yet, he isn’t as deep in the forest as he was when he was admitted. We created this page so that when Cole wakes up we can share your letters of encouragement and humor with him.

The one thing Cole values most is his family and friends. Toby, Melissa, John, and I are right by his side for this journey. We expect it to be a long one.

So what can you do for us? Not a thing except share your words of support on this page! Please no visits, gifts, flowers, or donations to this site—we're really just looking for your words of encouragement for Cole, which you can share in the Well Wishes section of this page. We’re completely focused on Cole right now, and while your love and support mean everything to us, we need to save our energy and strength to take care of Cole and can’t respond to texts/calls/emails. But, we will read and appreciate all of your messages on this page.

When we graduate from ICU, we will let you know. We know everyone is anxious to see him, and when he’s stronger, he will look forward to it. Please feel free to forward the link to this page to people we missed. He has so many friends in this world we aren’t sure how to update everyone without wearing ourselves out.

Thank you all for loving Cole as much as we do. He is, and always has been, an inspiration to all of us!

Our family is strong, and we’re ready to be by Cole’s side for as long as he needs us.

Thank you,
The Hardman family

Journal entry by Wendy Hardman

This year we are especially thankful to all of you and the well wishes you shared with us.  It was one of our hardest years, and your support helped us get through it.  We all knew Cole had unfinished business left in this world, and of course he overcame adversity once again.  We feel especially thankful for his progress.  He is one determined man and working hard on his recovery.  As you can see from the picture of Cole walking with his niece, he has moved off the walker and onto a cane.

Wishing you each good health and happiness during this Holiday Season.
