Journal entry by Dawn Koenen

Today was a roller coaster ride. When Clara was awakened at 8 a.m. Sunday morning for pain meds, she struggled but was able to communicate she was very, very close to death and requested calls to family members and her pastors. As her visitors arrived, Mom surprisingly lit up, sat propped up in bed, and began speaking clearly in full sentences. In fact, just before they arrived Mom joked, "Did you tell them I'm still here? They'll be disappointed I didn't die," which you know was so very far from the truth.

As the day progressed, Mom even ate a bit, rallying as many "I love yous" and goodbyes were exchanged with her parade of visitors. The evening ended with a visit from a hospice nurse, who tended not only to Mom's needs but also thoughtfully provided some training and coaching to the caregivers.

It's quite a sendoff we're experiencing, filled with love flowing both to and from our Mom. She and all members of her family cherish your love, continued prayers, and kind thoughts and gestures.
