Newest Update

Journal entry by Jessica Davis

Good Morning! October is bringing new things to many parts of our family! Mom has moved back into the inpatient rehab facility she was previously in. This is a praise and we are so thankful to be back in some more intensive therapy - primarily working on building on the work she has done at home to strengthen her legs. We went to visit her neurologist mid August and he determined with a nerve test that there was still damage being done to the myelin sheath protecting her nerves. We were a little discouraged about this because she has been making progress -even though slow- in her legs and feet. There is still quite a bit of tingling from her knee down to her toes but there is still continued increase in strength and mobility as she works with Physical Therapy. Her doctor prescribed another round of IVIG (one of the initial treatments that you receive upon your diagnosis of GBS). This part is a praise - we found out as the order was put in for the IVIG that insurance would only cover this minimally and it is extremely expensive. That was also discouraging but through the company that administers the treatment she was able to receive full financial assistance and the loading dose (4 days in a row) was administered September 20-23. She did great and now she is excited to get to work on this physical therapy. Just to give you an idea of where she is at - Mom has full mobility of her waist up. Her grip on her hands is not back to 100% but she can grasp things well enough to do all the day to day tasks. She recently has been able to scoot across the sliding board herself to her wheelchair. This is huge! We are so excited for this milestone! Her PT has been really working on strengthening her hip flexors - marching muscles as these are what lift our legs for walking. she can do leg lifts and a lot of different exercises in the bed with her legs. On Friday the 24th with the assistance of my dad and her occupational therapist she stood up on her feet. Not full body weight but was able to push up from bent over to standing straight up. This was another victory as we were unsure that she would be able to put much pressure on her feet. She experienced some discomfort later in the day but nothing major. So now she will be receiving 3 hours a day of therapy and we are praying and hoping she will be able to endure and work hard in the time she has there.

Joyelle and Cydell are also in the hospital hoping to meet baby Jayden face to face sometime today. She was induced yesterday and its been a long day and night but we are getting closer!!

We are so grateful to all of you who continue to pray for Mom!
