I promised my dad I'd go to bed at a reasonable time tonight, but I wanted to give everyone a quick update since my moms condition is so fragile and I know many of you are anxious for news.
There is nothing hugely significant to report today except that the doctor is concerned that my mom has been intubated for too long and he feels she needs to be moved to a trach tube as soon as possible. It's generally considered risky to keep someone on a ventilator for more than 10 days. In order to do the tracheostomy, the respiratory therapist needs to be able to get the oxygen percentage on the ventilator down to around 60%. My mom was on 70% all day with her oxygen saturation hovering around 90. It's acceptable for her oxygen saturation to be from 88-100, but the intensivist would definitely prefer it to be 90 or higher.
Overall, it seems the intensivist is not overly optimistic about my moms prognosis. However, they see no sign of any other organs failing yet which is a HUGE blessing. They did have to start giving her small doses of vasopressors to keep her blood pressure up over the last couple of days, but it's not a huge issue at this point.
Please pray that my mom's lungs and body will heal and be stable enough to move to a trach tube in the next few days.
