Journal entry by Jo Ann Raasch-Lesser

Wow, how time flies, It’s been two months since my last journal entry.

We are nearing on the anniversary of when this nightmare all began, I look at Facebook and it share my memories from a year ago and I still have snipits of what our lives used to be and it saddens me to think that it’ll start showing my the horror that we lived through. Don’t get mad or upset with me, I’m very thankful for how far we’ve come and I know we have a long way to go, but I’m not looking forward to the reminders, they’re very vivid and etched forever in my memory. I do look at the pictures every once in a while just to remind me of Chuck’s progress and it’s amazing and a miracle.

Chuck was making good progress he seemed to be getting more independent and seemed to be a happier person, until 2 weeks ago when we were leaving for therapy and I was rolling him down the ramp and he all of a sudden had a seizure. I guess this is normal for stroke survivors and has been put on medication to help prevent anymore  f those. For the past two weeks he’s been getting acclimated to the new drug in his system and it causes him to be drowsy and dizzy, so his walking and other independent activities have been put on hold, which set him back and is very discouraging. This week he seems to be doing a little better, more active in the afternoon and evening. I’m really glad that we were running late for our appointment and decided to just use the wheelchair rather than walk to the car like we normally do. Had he been walking he would have suffered much more than just a sore back.

One thing good that’s happened is the covid restrictions are being pulled back and Bellin Hospital allowed for the stroke survivors group to attend their monthly bike ride held each summer, so Chuck attended his first one yesterday and did really good. I was so nervous about him participating in this event, how would he do this will he fall, get hurt or worse be disappointed that he wasn’t able to do it. But this man surprises me every time and I don’t know why I worry. He’s pretty tired today, but he had a great time and wants to go back next month.

So, with the anniversary looming around the corner, I’m looking forward to getting out of the house and up to our happy place, hoping to forget the day and to make better memories to look back on when this day rolls around each year. It’s weird to call it an anniversary because it’s not worth celebrating.

I’ll be putting a few pictures in the gallery, you’ll have to check them out.

Take care,

Love Jo and Chuck
