Journal entry by Amanda Mikhaeil

Yesterday, 5/17 Wednesday, I drove from Minneapolis to Perham to take my daughter to her orthodontist appointment and then drove back to Minneapolis after the appointment. I had minimal hours of broken sleep, 2 to 4 hours because the thermostat broke, causing the room to heat up to 89 degrees.  They fixed it at about 3am. I woke up at 5am to drive home. The orthodontist had no openings for 2 months, which meant Raina would have to wait until July to get her braces off, if I cancelled her appointment.

While I was gone, two volunteers sat with Chris at the hospital and played games with him, which was a blessing. The surgeons and nurse practitioner met with him and decided he could discharge later in the day after he got his 6th round of antibiotics.  He was much improved, no fever or nausea for greater than 24 hours, swelling decreased, and gait, pain, and appetite somewhat improved although food/fluid intake still poor. He had to get a new IV site just prior to getting his last antibiotic bc it was clogged. This was his 4th IV in 7 days. The IV prior to that leaked. The one prior to that was painful and not flushing adequately. Overall, Chris was a champ through  it all.

Thirty minutes prior to discharging, he threw up. I still decided to bring him home and continue to monitor for infection, fever, swelling, increased pain, and further n/v/d.  We left the hospital at about 730pm, after waiting 2-3 hours to meet with provider to get discharged. After we got home, he threw up in the middle of the night.

So far today, his skin color is good, and he's tolerating food today without nausea, with a fair appetite.  Some ongoing mild dysuria that hopefully resolves within the next couple of days.

We are planning for him to return to school Monday if all goes well.  The trend continues to be positive, day 7 post-op, praise God and those who skillfully treated his illness. We are so thankful he his home. Ellianna pointed out all of his owies when got home and gave him a big hug, refusing to leave his side. His oldest sister gave him a long hug today, and told him he's a beast after everything he went thru, amazed at his high pain tolerance (she nearly faints at the sight of needles).  Raina has been a sweetheart to him, helping pay for a new lego set for him and talking to him frequently throughout the week. Suhaila allowed him to use her charger cord for a week and has been a little distant from him bc she was scared, and she is the closest siblings in age and probably the closest as far as temperament and growing up playing together.  She also helped Grandma with taking care of Ellianna and tidying up the house while I was gone.  Dad helped make sure things ran smoothly at home and went back to work last Friday. I was shocked to learn my three oldest daughters got me 3 dozen roses for mothers day.  That was so previous and unexpected.

We are so thankful he's home and thank you to everyone who prayed for us and reached out to give support. You know who you are and we are forever grateful.
