Journal

I’ve been thinking about herding a lot lately as I’ve been taking all but the bucks (twenty-two goats!) outside the protection of their fence and guard dogs to graze on a more healthy pasture each day. I open the gate and lead them out. I stay with them, alert for strays and predators (really, the dogs can do their work from right next door. But I’m still watching!) When I’m ready to head back in, I open the gate, walk in, and they follow. They trust me for what is good and to keep them safe. In John 10, Jesus calls himself the good shepherd. Shepherds in his time let sheep out of their fold (a walled pen), grazed them and led them to water, protecting them from predators all the while. But at night? He led them back to their fold and then SLEPT IN THE DOOR to continue to keep them safe! And Jesus calls himself this for US. We can trust him to lead us to the good grazing and the still waters and to keep us safe. I find this image incredibly comforting and a pattern of prayer for others.

  • Chris has completed seven radiation treatments. That’s 1/4 of them!
  • He hasn’t had any side effects from the radiation, but is sustaining a headache from the oral chemotherapy.
  • We know that side effects could ramp up as the treatments progress, but are thankful for the decent days so far.
  • Chris will be in Banner Elk, NC this weekend for Art on the Greene. We‘re praying that the Good Shepherd will protect him from fatigue so that he can work the entire weekend. He has made some beautiful lamps and flower vase holders this week!
  • Our daughter-in-law, Blair remains hospitalized on complete bed rest for a high-risk pregnancy. She is 32.5 weeks now! The plan is still a c-section in mid-June. Please pray for Hank and his in-laws as they care for the girls, support Blair, and work.

We continue to give thanks for the way people are showing up - prayer, encouraging words, cards, visits, the good coffee, help with gas and meals. We are encouraged and definitely learning ways to show up for others that we had never thought of before. Thank you.
