Newest Update

Journal entry by Michelle Petrus

I tried all the remedies for spasms at night and in the early morning recommended by doctors and friends without significant results. I decided to call my doctor at the Shepherd Center and get his opinion. He only treats patients with spinal cord injuries and follows the patients that live around Atlanta after discharge. He had three different pharmaceutical recommendations. He said that the spasms are common and usually occur day and night. He says the spasms will worsen for eight months after the injury and then plateau and possibly decrease. He states the spasms will be present lifelong and I will not be able to tough it out without medication. I started on a higher dose of Baclofen at night last week which was his first recommendation. The spasms still occur but don’t tend to wake me up till 4AM. I am happy that someone told me what to expect and that I shouldn’t expect an instant cure. I will have to tolerate the spasms and be thankful for the amount of sleep that I get every night. I am sad that the spasms may be forever. My family, employees, friends and patients lift me up every day with their encouraging words. Going to the office for half a day worsens my neck pain but I am trying to do what I can. My faith in God is unchanged. God has a plan for me whether I like it or not.
