Cheryl’s Story

Site created on August 20, 2019

Welcome to Cheryl's CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.

June 28, 2019, Cheryl retired from Minnesota State University, Mankato, where she worked for 33+ years. During her last month of work, she started getting a lot of headaches, bouts of nausea and becoming slightly forgetful. We chocked it up to the stress she was feeling about retiring and wanting to get all of her work finished and loose ends tied up before she left. Her first week of retirement was very busy and full of excitement with Joe's & Pam's wedding and 4th of July celebrations. July came and went—with lots of time spent at the lake home enjoying the beautiful Minnesota summer with family and friends—but the headaches and nausea continued, her confusion and forgetfulness began to increase and she was starting to have a hard time looking at her phone and responding to text messages. August brought the 44th Annual Asleson Family Pig Roast. We had a great weekend at the lake with lots of family, but Cheryl's headaches started getting stronger around this time. The evening of her 62nd birthday, on August 14th, she got a very strong headache—it was bad, unlike any of the headaches she had been experiencing. Something was wrong.

August 15, 2019, Cheryl was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. There are two large masses on her brain, along with smaller clusters—it is inoperable because of where the masses are located. The tumor likely started growing about six months ago. A biopsy on August 19th confirmed the tumor was glioma. Her official diagnosis is Glioblastoma Multiforme (also called GBM), a malignant grade IV tumor which presents with more than one focus of the disease.  Radiation and chemotherapy treatments—which can be done in Mankato—will begin after Labor Day, with the goal to try and shrink the tumor and give us more time.

Cheryl has a fire of determination burning within her that is so strong. She wants to fight as hard as she can—to be here as long as she can. And we will be here, right beside her through it all. We know there is no healer like the Lord, our savior. With our God with us, we will fear no evil because He does impossible things.

Mom is overwhelmed with emotions these days because of all her blessings in this world. She said, “How lucky am I to have all these blessings; such a wonderful life and all these wonderful people who are in my life? I am so blessed.” To which I quickly reminded her that we are actually the lucky ones to have her in our lives. She is truly one in a million, and we are the ones who are blessed because we get to call her wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.

We appreciate all the love and support, words of hope and encouragement and the many, many prayers. Keep them coming!

God is Good—All the Time!

Cheryl was a blessing to so many people and touched the lives of others through her gift of kindness, gentle spirit, and infectious smile. Our lives will forever be better because she was part of it.

Cheryl enjoyed spending time at her family’s cabin on Lake Ballantyne, being with her grandchildren and attending their activities, watching the Minnesota Vikings, and especially her horses. One of her favorite places to go horseback riding was 7 Mile Creek, and taking the little ones on rides around the farmyard. Most of all, Cheryl loved her family. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She was immensely proud of each one of them and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories. Her joy, compassion and loving heart will live on in her children and grandchildren. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, Gene; three children, Christopher (Kristina) Haefner of Shakopee, Joseph (Pamela) Haefner of Fairmont, and Joni Beth (John) Written of Prior Lake; eleven grandchildren, Joslyn, Veronica, Leo, Andrew, Alayna, Luke, Jake, Noah, Zack, Jaya and Jacob; father, Allan Asleson of Madison Lake; six siblings, David Asleson, Judy Anderson, Steve (Patty) Asleson, Gail (Bill) Vagts, Barb (Dave) Conrad, and Jane (Rich) Resutek; in-laws, Jerome (Janet) Haefner, Gary (Jane) Haefner, Nita (Chuck) Wallace, Rosemary (Dave) Brosch, Andy (Marcia) Haefner, Bill Haefner, LeeAnn (Jim) Johnson, and Barb (Parker) Purier; aunts, uncles, and a host of nieces, nephews and other extended family.
