Today was a big day for Charlotte. Today she was able to transfer to a reclining wheelchair for the first time. Karrie said that Charlotte burst into happy tears once she was in the chair, knowing that this was a huge step for herself. Her first experience in her wheelchair today involved touring the entire floor that her room is located on, and enjoying the opportunity to finally look out all the windows. Charlotte's time spent in the chair is currently limited to about 40 minute intervals, because it is still quite painful to be transferred as well as to sit. The angle in which Charlotte sits in the chair will very gradually be increased each day, in hopes of getting to that upright sitting position they are working towards in physical therapy. I've included a picture of today's first wheelchair experience.

This week also brought a few more positive changes for Charlotte and Karrie. On Wednesday they were relocated to a room in the rehab/physical therapy wing of the hospital. This change in rooms occurred because Charlotte was successfully removed from all tubes for pain medication and other functions earlier in the week. Her only method of receiving pain relief now is through oral medication. This is great news as it has alleviated all of the nausea Charlotte was once experiencing and as a result she is eating and drinking at more regular intervals. Charlotte told me yesterday that she feels so much better now that she can eat and drink without feeling sick!

Charlotte has also enjoyed a lot of quality time with her big sister, Abby, this week. Abby has been with Charlotte most of the week, encouraging her, talking with her, and just hanging out. We are all so grateful that Abby was able to be here. Charlotte has also enjoyed a couple of visits from the resident therapy dog, Halo. Halo is very calm and brings big smiles and comfort to everyone she visits. I've included a picture of one of Halo's visits. Charlotte's boyfriend, Riley, as well as other family members, have continued the visits every day, bringing in cards and gifts generously given from so many caring people both locally and across the country. We are continually amazed by everyone's generosity and can't thank you enough for the encouragement you provide. Thank you for helping us through this difficult journey.
