Charles D.’s Story

Site created on January 24, 2017

Welcome to our Caring Bridge website.  Just before New Years, Chuck started having some changes to his appetite and slight, intermittent pain in his sides.  I scheduled him for clinic visit on January 9, but by that point, he had much more serious symptoms, including jaundice.  After one urine screen and vitals, the clinic immediately referred us to Maple Grove ER.  Once there, they were thinking obstructed bile duct or gallbladder, however after an MRI, they confirmed a mass on the head of the pancreas, that appeared cancerous.  Maple Grove then referred us to North Memorial (this is still Monday) and scheduled a an endoscopic ultrasound for a confirmation biopsy.  On Tuesday, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  On Wednesday, he had to have a procedure called an ERPC to open up the bile duct that was blocked due to the tumor - what a difference that made!  He was back to his old self again.  On Thursday they implanted his port for chemo therapy, and was able to come home that night.  Chuck is now going to be having two months of chemo, treatments every two weeks, and then get a scan to see if the tumor has decreased in size.  Once this has happened he will then undergo a surgery called the Whipple.  If successful, the operation can/should remove all of the cancer at once.  We are going to keep this up to date as much as possible so everyone knows what is going on.
