Carrie’s Story

Site created on December 18, 2013

On the night of December 12, 2013, our lives were turned upside down when a tumor was discovered in the occipital lobe of the left cerebral hemisphere in my brain.  I have created this CaringBridge site to keep friends and family updated.  We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement during this time when it matters most.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Carrie King

I had a scan today and was encouraged by the results.  The scan showed a significant reduction in inflammation and no tumor growth.  As much as I dislike being on steroids, they allowed this scan to provide as clear a picture as possible of the state of my tumor and for that I am thankful.

I will have a follow-up scan in two months.  In the meantime, I will remain on steroids to continue to control the remaining inflammation.  I have an option to reduce the dosage of the steroids but will remain at the current dosage for at least another month.  I recently made a change in my blood pressure medication and don't want to make too many changes at once.

One of the highlights for me of our vacation this summer was experiencing the majesty of the Coastal Redwoods.  I especially enjoyed the self-guided walking tour of Founders Grove at Humboldt Redwood State Park. I thought the trees that had been damaged by multiple fires but had continued to live were fascinating and couldn't help but draw a parallel to my battle with cancer.  The past few months have been some of the hardest yet in my battle and I take comfort in the old growth trees I found so fascinating ....
I may be damaged by fires, but I WILL continue to live.
