Newest Update

Journal entry by debra davis

Lots has happened since my last update.  Carolyn had horrible throat pain and was unable to eat or drink, so she was put on a (nose) feeding tube.  She is now doing much better and able to eat soft food and the tube was removed.  Actually, it was "accidentally" removed when Carolyn was dressing, but it was time for it to come out anyway. OP and PT continues, and while she has a long way to go, there is some good progress with learning new life skills.  The rehab hospital as taken care of ordering her a custom wheelchair (for her small size) and it will be here in about 5-6 weeks.  The estimated date of her hospital discharge is March 14th, but we are asking for an extension.  At this time, she will be going back her apartment with around the clock care and OP and PT coming in 3 days a week.  The caregivers are evaluating her home today to assess what medical equipment is needed.  Also, they are meeting with Carolyn's current therapists to train to take over her care. Some folks have asked about Carolyn's mental state.  She is fully present and knows everything going on.  Her spirits are much better than mine would be if I was never going to walk again.  She is working very hard on her life skills and is usually exhausted at the end of the day because, now the smallest thing (i.e., getting dressed) takes lots of effort. Don't get me wrong - she is mad, sad, devastated, but she is putting her head down and doing what is takes to move forward.
