She met with the radiation oncologist last week and the doctor told her that because she has cirrhosis (caused by fatty liver disease), her platelet level is still low and some other health issues, she cannot safely have surgery to remove the rest of the tumor. The hematologist agreed with this decision. The doctor estimates that they've only gotten about 20-30% of the tumor, but will know for sure in a few weeks after she gets an MRI. She also can't have chemo, since her platelets are so low. Originally, the doctor thought she may be able to do internal radiation, but she told my mom that procedure would even be too risky.
So basically the radiation oncologist said there's no good options. They've done all they can at this point. The liver issues have really complicated things and prevented successful treatment of the cancer. My mom asked how long she has without treatment and the doctor told her in her professional opinion about 6-12 months. The hematologist basically said the same thing. He said the liver damage is irreversible and mom would need a liver transplant. A patient can't even get on a waiting list unless they've been cancer free for 3 years...We'll see the Gynecologist Oncologist in October. She'll need another Pet Scan then to see if the cancer is spreading. They wait a month to let the radiation continue to work.
The last few months, since June, have been absolutely exhausting and daunting at times. My sister and my uncle, Mike, have helped and been caregivers as well. I've had to lean on my faith and my circle of people. Kevin has been such a help too, by listening, running errands for me, and just being there. I've appreciated all the prayers and love from friends, family and co-workers. Some of the St. Paul moms got a meal train together, which was so great and helpful. I've received so many texts, cards, and support. I'm truly grateful and blessed to have a strong community of faith-filled people in my life.
I've told my mom to continue to pray and live her best life! I told her God has a plan for her and whatever that may be, he's with her and will take care of her. Jesus will continue to walk alongside of her. Whether in our last days or the prime of our life, that sense of peace makes life's trials and battles bearable.
