On December 2nd, 2021, Carol Shields had a hemorrhagic stroke on the temporal and parietal lobes of the left side of her brain. Doctors considered the stroke to be "massive." She was rushed to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital's ICU and remained there for nearly a week. She is now in an acute rehabilitation facility in the western suburbs of Chicago where she currently has 24/7 care and 3 hours of physical, occupational, and speech therapy during the business week. Her children Charlie, Andy, and Kerry have been with her as much as they humanly can be during this time.
After 3 weeks she is still 100% dependent but every day shows a little bit of progress. The stroke effected her speech and motor skills. As each stroke is unique to the person, we are still unsure how long Carol's recovery timeline will be or what her life will look like upon recovery.
Her children have requested that concerned parties please refer to this site for updates and will be unable to respond to calls and text messages at this time. Carol is also not accepting visitors or food donations. If you are interested in helping, the only thing the family is currently requesting is donations to GoFundMe via Caring Bridge. That website can be found here. https://gofund.me/c0ba825d.
All donations will go towards supporting Carol's medical bills.
