Carmen’s Story

Site created on March 1, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement for mom - she will love reading them later!

Let's catch everyone up so you have the big picture of where this journey began.

In late January, mom developed weakness in her left arm. Following a few doctor and ER visits, there was a large tumor found on the right side of her brain. On Jan. 31st most of the tumor was removed and mom exceeded the surgeon's expectations for her physical recovery. The team at Essentia was great to her and she recovered at Oak Crossing in DL to gain strength and mobility. She returned home in mid-February and was ready to tackle the rest of the tumor in her brain. Following the oncology consultation, mom was diagnosed with grade 4 Glioblastoma. This was not the outcome we were looking for, but in true mom fashion she was bold, courageous, and ready to "tackle this damn tumor." Upon further consultation with fantastic physicians, mom was referred to Mayo Clinic in Rochester to get another team to review her case. After lots of appointments, discussions with amazing neurosurgeons and oncologists, and some tough/real conversations,  mom underwent a second brain surgery on Feb 28th to extract more cancer.

That brings us to today, March 2nd. Mom is recovering well. She continues to show amazing strength, grit, and true determination that makes her the most amazing woman that she is. Of course she is keeping us on point with her quick wit, stubbornness, and bit of sass!  The next step in this journey is to treat the cancer. We will work with the oncology team at Mayo to run this marathon as we are reminded daily that this is not a sprint.
