Carly’s Story

Site created on August 13, 2022

On June 27th, Carly was at Como Pool with her kids and friends when she suffered a grand mal seizure.  She was taken by ambulance to the ER, where she regained consciousness and tests initially came back normal.  During her follow-up appointments in the weeks that followed, an MRI found a low-grade glioma in the right temporal lobe of her brain.  Glioma is a term used to define cancer of the glial cells that surround nerve endings in the brain.  In the last few weeks, Carly has met with neurologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists, and radiologists both at M Health and the Mayo Clinic to determine the best plan to treat this.  The doctors she talked to agree that surgery, followed by a combination of radiation and chemotherapy treatment is the best course of action.

On September 7th, Carly will have brain surgery to remove this glioma. During surgery, they will biopsy the glioma to determine the kind of tumor and the grade of her cancer, and her surgeon will attempt to remove as much of the tumor as possible.  Because brain tumors can be difficult to remove depending on the surrounding brain tissue and how difficult it can be to separate from the normal brain tissue, radiation (proton) therapy is recommended as a follow-up and then chemotherapy.  Carly will need 3 weeks of recovery after this surgery.  Then she will begin therapy after recovery.  Radiation therapy will take about 6 weeks.  Chemotherapy will be 6 cycles, with one cycle equaling one month.

As many of you visiting this page know, Carly is a true, one-of-a-kind light to all she meets and spends time with.  Her listening ear and honest advice, her selflessness, her unique storytelling, and her fun-loving nature - all qualities we have each individually grown to love and need as an essential part of our own lives.  Now, she needs her village as she begins this journey of recovery and healing.  She is one of the strongest people I know, and she will no doubt show this strength fiercely throughout this, but there are so many things that can be done to make this lighter for her.  Prayers and notes of encouragement.  There will be more information linked on how to sign up for a day to help with meals, rides for Brandon, Bree, and Lily, or other household needs through Meal Train Plus (https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/zoklgo) under "Ways to Help".  If you just want to help with the compounding medical bills and expenses this fight will take, there will also be information and a link through Go Fund Me also under "Ways to Help".

Newest Update

Journal entry by Jennifer Peterson

Hey everyone,

Carly has told me how much she appreciates everyone checking in with her, it means so much!  As we all know, what she is going through is not a sprint but a marathon, and knowing she has people continuing to run alongside her is huge.

Carly met with all of her doctors, had her MRI, and has reviewed the results with her neurologist, the radiation oncologist, and the surgeon who performed her brain surgery.  The original radiologists were not concerned from the results.  However, the scan did show there is some slight growth, and the doctors are unsure if it is the tumor or some post-operative scar tissue.  All in all, they do not feel this is something to be concerned about right now, which is good news.  They did recommend that Carly begin doing MRIs every 3 months to continue to monitor the area.

Carly did sustain a small concussion after the seizure, which made recovery harder, so prayers for continued strength and complete healing are needed, as are prayers for peace as she awaits the upcoming MRI.  We are so thankful Carly has not had any more seizures since beginning back on seizure medication again.  I watch in awe as she fights through the symptoms and uncertainty of this each day to show up for her kids, her family, her friends, and her coworkers and patients.  She even took a 24 hour road trip with her family to her parents in Florida - what a wonderful escape for them all from the day to day of this!  We will continue to post updates after her next scan.
