Carl’s Story

Site created on July 2, 2018

As most of you know, I was admitted to the hospital in mid June after an abnormal left heart catheterization procedure that showed my heart beating at a very weak rate. My heart wasn't pumping blood through my body strong enough to provide adequate oxygen to my other organs. As a result, I was given a IV medication called Primacor, to help my heart to pump stronger.

The IV medicine responded to my heart well, but as a result of my heart’s condition, I was told that a heart transplant would be a requirement due to the size and pumping function of my heart. The normal heart size is 4-5 CM in diameter, and my heart is 8cm. Yep, a big heart indeed. Carl is supported by his wife of 14 years Felicia and four kids: Caitlyn (13), Carl Jr. (11), Christa (9), and Camren (8). I am currently the Manager of Employee Recognition at Delta. I started my career as a Ready Reserve agent in Huntsville, Alabama, and worked through 7 different cities, including managing the Norfolk, Birmingham and Cincinnati stations, before being selected to lead the employee recognition team in Atlanta. I’ve had the blessing to interact and become friends with so many Delta employees, recognizing the many great faces of Delta.

I was recently transferred from Piedmont Hospital to Emory’s Heart Center due to their Center of Excellence status. My first appointment with Dr. Alana Morris at Emory went very well. She was very informative and insightful. I will begin my transplant evaluation on August 15th and 16th. Between the two days I have at least 10-11 different appointments scheduled.

As most of you know, I was hospitalized in late June. Shortly thereafter, a dear friend, Betty Carrigan, started a GoFundMe page on our family’s behalf. To my humble surprise, soooo many people made countless contributions. Contributions that have been so beneficial for medicine, groceries, kids clothes, gas, etc. Several words continue to come to mind, but one always stands out.... Grateful. There were also those who made deposits directly into our checking account or who sent donations through the mail. Now, several addresses I have - particularly from those who sent donations through the mail, but for those who donated through GoFundMe, there wasn’t a way for me to collect your address...... so, would you mind taking 2 minutes to email your mailing address to carlwanderson@outlook.com? I know that some of you will say, “we did it from the heart, and we don’t need a thank you”....but please....my family and I would like to send each of you a special “Thank You” for being there for us during a very difficult time.... Love You All!
