Welcome to our CaringBridge site. We hope to keep everyone updated on Gary's condition in one place, and also to rally some support for his wife, Lynn.
Gary has faced many health challenges in recent years. Four years ago, Gary was hospitalized and was put into an induced coma. He quit drinking and fought to get his strength back through physical therapy. Two years ago, Gary was diagnosed with lymphoma. He underwent chemotherapy treatments and went into remission. He enjoyed the past couple summers at the family cabin on Lake Ida (near Alexandria), and he even initiated a new family tradition in 2018 - a July camping trip!
Unfortunately, Gary wasn't' feeling well and went to the doctor in August. He was diagnosed with therapy-induced preleukemia on August 14th. He began chemotherapy treatments almost immediately, but his cancer still progressed. On October 28th, Gary was diagnosed with therapy-induced acute myeloid leukemia. By the end of that week, Gary was in the hospital with an infection. He stayed for 10 days before being released on November 14th. Gary planned to do more chemotherapy treatments but was re-admitted to the hospital on November 20th for an infection and blood pressure concerns. At this point, doing more chemotherapy would have required a month-long stay in the hospital and would have possibly not been successful.
Gary Sanders married Lynn Sanders over 36 years ago. Together, they have two sons, one daughter-in-law, and two grandsons. Gary has been a great husband, father, and grandfather. His generosity has touched all those who know him. Lynn has taken to caring for Gary full-time in his last couple of months. There will likely be hospital bills and other related expenses, as she is unable to work while caring for him.
