Candace’s Story

Site created on July 30, 2022

“These tumors are rarely ever cancerous,” I was told. Well, mine, it turns out was. I’m still grappling with this, my new reality. My general surgeon referred me to his colleague - an oncology surgeon - who saw me just 8 days after my surgery that excised the tumor. And so the trip I’m about to embark on (described below) begins.

Hey everyone❤️ Remember me? 🥰

In the past, when I underwent my 3-month scans, my oncologist typically sent a reassuring message on the same day, confirming that “scans were good.” Subsequently, we would delve into the details during my scheduled appointment a few days later. This routine had been consistent …. until this time.

Unexpectedly the message was conveyed that my scan results would be shared during my scheduled appointment on Thursday, causing immediate panic as I feared the worst - a cancer recurrence. The apprehension lingered until I reached  out to my surgical oncologist to access the results through his office. Fortunately, tonight I received notification of a test result in MyMethodist chart revealing no signs of recurrence.

The tension in our household was palpable, and relief flooded in swiftly once the truth emerged.

By my calculation, I have three more 3 month scans to go until I am out of the “2 year danger zone” of recurrence - so to speak.

Ron and I have created a video as a reminder to our future selves: to resist the urge to speculate and wait for the doctors to provide the results. It’s a lesson in not needlessly complicating our lives with unnecessary worry.

These next three months are going to be glorious! When I feared that it was back, I thought to myself: Well, I have certainly filled my past three months with love from family and friends. It’s a good feeling and one I hope to repeat in three more months.

Till then,

💜, Candace
