Journal entry by Cassie Ackerman —
2 years of loving our sweet, resilient Calen and a lifetime of memories yet to experience. We recently made a trip to the U of M for a visit for one of Cal’s routine visit. We ended up taking the trip with the entire family because the boys agreed that they wanted to be in the study that Cal was entered into at one of his first visits. They want to try and help other families 💜 the sweetest boys. We apparently have a pretty unique family in the SMA world as we have 5 kids but only 1 with SMA (remember genetically it’s 1 in 4). Many SMA families have multiple kids with SMA or even have multiple kids and all of them have SMA. The research team was very excited to have the kids want to enter.
Calen continues to exceed expectations. His appointment at the U went very well. He’s meeting all of his milestones which is amazing. He needs to work a little on his speech but that’s coming alone slowly but surely. His physical therapist was extremely impressed with his ball skills (perk of having 3 sport loving older brothers). She said it’s uncommon to be doing as well as he is. She estimated his ball skills to be at the level of a 3 or 4 year old 🎉 God is so good. We are so proud of Cal’s determination to keep up with his brothers in all they do
We added the sweetest little lady to our crew this year and Calen is obsessed with his little sister. The older boys say she was sent to us straight from grandma in heaven and she often reminds me of my sweet momma. It’s so fun to watch them play and grow together
We can’t thank everyone enough for the ongoing prayers and love! We feel it. Praying for another 6 months of “medically boring” life, praying cal continues to exceed expectations and doesn’t lose any of his skills and praying for each of you that you have a year of health and love.
