Brian had been experiencing debilitating pain in his lower back and legs causing weakness and falling.  In addition, he had a very concerning cough that was causing him to be short of breath.  I finally convinced him to go to our doctor.  An appointment that changed our life.

On July 25th, his doctor was concerned about how poor health he looked and was rushed to Unity Hospital.  Countless tests and bloodwork later, everyone’s worst nightmare was confirmed.  Brian was diagnosed with lung cancer that had traveled to his spine.  The onslaught of doctors, specialists and nurses in the following days to make a plan and focused on getting Brian out of indescribable pain and suffering.

It didn’t take long to receive another blow.  While sitting and waiting to meet with the pulmonary specialist team, Amy received a phone call from her boss who fired her for leaving work and not being able to report to work that day, and apologized for his untimely delivery.

We came home after 6 days but were unable to control his pain without IV meds.  We returned to our PCP for his referral to an oncologist and pain management team.  The oncologist office told me they would have someone call me in a week to make a consult.  Our incredible PCP made a call and the following morning on August 3rd, we walked into Lipson Cancer Institute shaking in fear for 3 days of intensive inpatient chemotherapy.   We were met at the door by a team who immediately took us to meet with our oncologist Dr. Alam.  By that afternoon, Brian began day 1 of chemotherapy.

And that is how our journey began….

Newest Update

Journal entry by Amy Shulman

Today was the day we have been waiting for since diagnosis on 7/25.  Brian went for his first scan after 3 rounds of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy last Monday and we met with his oncologist Dr. Imran today.

Drum roll please….. Brian’s mass on his lung has gone from 5.4 inches to 4 centimeters!!!!!!!  He has increases spots of the bone cancer but that’s not necessarily bad news.  The CT scan is just an image.  It’s possible the “spots” are called sclerotic which means that the cancer is gone and has turned back into bone which leaves “scarring spots on the bone”.  If he presented today with pain or sickness, they would be inclined to say the cancer had spread.  But he has had ZERO pain for over a month.  To be sure, they are not waiting the standard 3 months for the next scan…they will repeat it in 2 months.

In addition, at scan time they will be doing a brain scan to ensure it has not traveled to his brain as his type of cancer “has tendency to do”. They don’t believe it has, but are taking every precaution.  Prayers still needed!!!!

Brian will start his 4th round of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy tomorrow.  He has escaped essentially side effect free with ZERO sickness, nausea, etc…. The worst is constipation and fatigue immediately following treatment .  Then in about 4 days, he’s back to himself.  They are debating if his body needs round 5 and/or 6 and if it’s even necessary.

Our days are filled with appointments and working around the house mostly.  Brian is 10 weeks sober and feels great, but still has little of a voice.  We are hopeful and positive that things will continue being successful.  And with all your prayers, love and support, we know they will be!
