Brianna’s Story

Site created on February 12, 2024

Dear Friends and Family,

I'm creating this site to keep you all informed as Brianna faces her upcoming Aortic Root & Valve Replacement Surgery. For those who may not be aware, Brianna was born with Turner Syndrome, a chromosomal condition that affects a small percentage of females. Despite the challenges it presents, Brianna has always faced life with remarkable resilience.

Turner Syndrome often brings with it congenital heart issues, and Bri hasn't been spared from this aspect. During her recent check-up at the Mayo Clinic, it was discovered that her ascending Aortic root aneurysm had grown to 4.2 cm, requiring surgery. Additionally, her leaking Aortic Valve will need to be replaced.

The decision was made that on Friday, March 15th, Bri will undergo open-heart surgery at Mayo Clinic to address these issues.  The Doctors will repair and replace her Aortic Root and Aortic Valve. She has opted for a mechanical valve which has the best longevity and minimizes the likelihood of a 4th sternotomy which comes with risks the more times it’s done.

While the road ahead is undoubtedly challenging, Brianna's strength, determination and stubborness I might lovingly add, have seen her through many of these trials before. Bri is courageous and  anxious to get recovery started.  It's worth noting that she's also in the best physical shape she's ever been, having taken up running in recent years. Perhaps she's taking after me in that regard!  ;)

As we rally around Brianna during this time, let's channel our collective hope, Prayers and positive energy towards her.  We will take them all! Our family is ready to support her through this journey and looking forward to brighter days ahead.

I will keep this as updated as possible.

Love to all!

Greetings Everyone from the trenches of heart surgery recovery!

First of all, I want to say THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for all the INCREDIBLE support you have offered to me and my family during the past couple of weeks.   I cannot put into words how encouraging it has been to have so many people pulling for me.

In the interest of transparency, I will say that this entire journey has not been easy.  And it has come with a lot of frustration, highlighting the general "impatient" trait that resides in me ;)

Call me naieve, but I kind of had a vision that, once leaving the hospital, it would be a quite swift, steady climb towards "normal."  It is quickly becoming clear, though, that "normal" will be a significantly longer, slower ways off than I want.

It is hard coming from being able to jog on the treadmill  for 30-45 mins and strength train regularly to finding it challenging to undertake 5 minutes of slooowww walking.  Not to mention going from living alone to needing substantial assistance with all activities of daily living (who knew taking a shower could be so tiring!)

The good news, though?  Every day genuinely does get better.  Even if marginally.  Walking increases by 1 minute every day.  I am able to undertake more and more daily living activities myself.  Even my sleep schedule is gradually returning to a more normal schedule.

Every small, but undoubtedly significant, improvement reinforces that, as long and arduous as this journey might feel right now, it WILL get better.  There will come a day when this becomes a mark in my personal history.  Rather than an ever-present, overwhelming reality.

The well-wishes and encouragement you all have offered has been instrumental in getting me as far as have come already.  The gratitude I have is beyond measure.

I am one lucky girl!

Love you all so much,

Bri
