Brent’s Story

Site created on February 6, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.  On 2/5, around 10pm, Brent was in Jamestown, ND with his semi.  While standing outside of his truck, the truck next to him began to pull out and turn right, hitting Brent’s truck, while also pinning and crushing him between the two semis.  The driver was unaware of what happened and continued to attempt to pull ahead, spinning Brent while continuing to crush him.  At some point, Brent was able to get out of it, and walk into the Shell station to ask them to call 911.  He was taken by ambulance to a Jamestown hospital where they stabilized him, and life flighted him to a bigger hospital in Fargo.  His know injuries so far are a dislocated shoulder (that has been repaired), a collapsed lung (he has a chest tube), multiple fractured ribs, and a fractured, right tibia.  He also has multiple torso and leg crush type injuries, and multiple cuts and bruises.  The current concerns are that the muscle damage from being crushed releases toxins that are affecting his kidneys.  They will continue to monitor him closely , and I will update as things change.  For now, he is critical but stable, and we are ALL so thankful that God kept him with us.  We are all up here with him, and appreciate all the prayers and well wishes.

Journal entry by Emily Meyer Dachel

What a crazy few months! I hope this post finds everyone healthy and enjoying their summer so far!  Things have started moving along for Brent.  On 5/28, he had his first rotator cuff repair surgery!  He says it's much less painful, but he is once again physically sidelined, so he's frustrated with that.  It looks like he will most certainly have to have his other shoulder repaired, as well as the right knee.  That's the leg that was broken, and he suffered a torn meniscus as well, which we did not know until recently.  Brent continues to struggle with short term memory and some cognition stuff, but he works twice a week with an amazing speech therapist.  He is now on a schedule of ST and PT 4 days a week.  Life, meanwhile, continues on.  We have Grace finishing her junior year, with senior pics scheduled for July 1st!  We are also busy ordering tuxes, bridesmaid dresses, mother of the bride dresses and planning bridal showers!! Income continues to be a struggle, but we are busy delivering hamburger, black dirt, gravel and whatever we can to keep the bills paid.  God has been very good in meeting our needs!  Thank you all for continuing to keep us in your thoughts and prayers!!
