Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia was the diagnosis we found out on December 10, 2018 and he began chemo treatments on December 11, 2018. So we were told that this form of Leukemia is very treatable and that most kids respond well to chemotherapy. Brantley would have a lumbar puncture to determine if there were any cancer cells in his spine. He would also be getting a PICC line to help with blood work, fluids, and chemotherapy. He could not have a port, due to a bacteria infection. He would have to be on antibiotics for 14 days before he could get a port.
In the beginning Brantley did not mind the zillion medicines were were giving him each day. By about the third day, he was done. He began gritting his teeth and trying to spit out the medicines. Well, we did find out that most of them taste terrible, especially the one they call Dex. It is the steroid. We tried flavoring but that did not work for him. This steroid has to be taken during the whole first phase, induction, which lasts 28 days. He will have to take that medicine off and on during his entire three years of treatment.  At this time, he was also taking three different stool softeners, a pain reliever, and Pepcid. It totaled about 7 medicines at the time, and a mouthwash to help prevent mouth sores.
We found the staff at the hospital to be so helpful and our family and friends to be so supportive during  this time. Lots of visitors, cards, and calls/texts made the first part bearable.
