Brandy’s Story

Site created on August 28, 2019

If you are reading this right now then you were sweet and curious enough to find out what is going on with me. Well, I have Myloedysplastic Syndrome which is a type of blood cancer. I am also high spectrum Acute Myeloid Leukemia. I am about to embark on my new journey to receive a bone marrow transplant. I will be admitted to UAB on September 25th for 5 days of intense chemo followed by my bone marrow transplant on October 1st. I will more than likely be in the hospital for about 3 months after my transplant to give my immune system time to heal and grow stronger. Some days will be good and some will be bad. I will lose my hair and deal with the lasting effects of the chemo but I am a fighter and will pull through this. This site is a way that I can communicate and update everyone on my progress. I encourage comments and well wishes. Those small gifts of love are exactly what I need to get me through this.

Journal entry by Brandy Burkett

Hey everyone,
Just wanted to check in and let everyone know that tomorrow is a big day. Dad and I will be driving to Birmingham to UAB to start all my pre-testing for my transplant. I have to have an ECHO, EKG, Pulmonary Function Test, blood tests and a chest x-ray. All these tests are to make sure my body can handle the transplant. It’s going to be a pretty long day but I am feeling a sense of peace knowing that all the doctors are working together to make sure I will be ok. I have to give a shout out to Dr. Papa, Dr. Johnson and Dr. Salzman for their ability to work together to make this transplant happen. I have already completed four rounds of chemo and will have another bone marrow biopsy next week to see if the cancer has progressed or if the chemo has kept it at bay. Wish me luck tomorrow. Goodnite.
