Bowie’s Story

Site created on November 28, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Bowie is a 23yr old young man just beginning his adult life when he was stricken by cancer- Advanced (latest stage) testicular cancer which presented itself as a huge tumor (16 x 16 x 13cm) in the mediastinal (chest) cavity. It had spread and is growing in his liver, and spine. Doctors now tell us the prognosis is 10% given the site of the primary tumor, the size, and the metastatic growth.  They cannot operate to remove the large tumor because the cancer is actively growing elsewhere.

Bowie is in the fight of his life yet maintains a fully positive outlook and confidence in overcoming this. He is an extraordinary person- one of the best that I know…

Bowie’s Background…

In June 2023 Bowie graduated from University of Oregon with a degree in Geospatial Data Science & Technology. He loved his college years and was a member of Chi Psi fraternity. Bowie had multiple job offers and decided to move back to the Bay Area (where we’re from) in order to start a role as a recruiter at Insight Global in their San Francisco office. Bowie moved in with his grandma in San Jose initially- with intention of moving up to San Francisco after working for a few months. He woke up at 4:45 daily in order to drive to train station and commute up to SF for a 7am start. Bowie did this five days a week even though he was allowed to work from home on Mondays and Fridays. Work-life suited him wonderfully and he has already been recognized by his management for his work ethic and results. Additionally, his social life was flourishing- new friends, activities every weekend, etc.

Cancer Diagnosis…

On the weekend of November 9th, Bowie drove up to Eugene, Oregon to see the Ducks-USC football game. It was my birthday that Friday and Bowie called me via FaceTime. I commented on his awful sounding cough and he casually mentioned that most of the time “pink stuff” would come up. I pointed out that this was blood and he needed to see a doctor ASAP. He immediately headed to an Urgent Care clinic. They performed an x-ray which found a very large lesion in his chest. The doctor there told him to drop everything and go to the ER. The ER gave him a CT scan revealing the lesion in more detail. It was a very large tumor: 16.3cm x 16.5cm x 15.5cm. In inches, that’s roughly 6.3 x 6.5 x 5. Tumors were also found in the liver. They informed Bowie that this was a very large tumor that needed a biopsy immediately. For this they had to secure a bed a different hospital with more specialists. Bowie called me up late Friday with this update and put one of the nurses on the phone. She said they may need to transfer him up to a Portland hospital for care. In the end, they fund a bed in a local specialty hospital. I jumped on a plane to Eugene, Oregon the next day and Colin (Bowie’s dad) drove up.

Bowie had the biopsy procedure Saturday and the oncologist gave us an early read on things. He said it was advanced cancer as it had been found in his liver as well. The detailed biopsy read out as aggressive germ cell tumor / testicular cancer. There are only three stages of this type of cancer, so this is stage IIIc. The primary tumor is in the mediastinal (chest) cavity and the metastasis was to the liver (several tumors found there).

By this point, Bowie was coughing up bright red blood and had a 104 fever. The doctors recommend initiating chemotherapy that very evening and told us there was a more than 70% chance he wouldn’t make it if we took him out of the hospital to travel to CA or CO. So we began chemo there in Oregon.

After a week in Oregon on chemo, the doctors cleared Bowie for travel and I took him home with me to Colorado for the rest of his treatments. Sooo grateful to be caring for him here. Nico has given him his bedroom and now sleeps on the basement sofa-bed. They love living together again. 💕

Bowie’s Colorado based oncology team (UC Health) recommended a different chemotherapy regimen and told us that surgery was highly likely. Further, they asserted that this cancer was very advanced and his prognosis was 50%, given the location, size, and origin of the tumor. Tough news for sure..

Meanwhile, my cherished friend Anne Carlson pulled out all the stops to get us in front of the head of oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota (!!). He in turn assigned us to an oncologist who specializes in non-seminomatous GCT testicular cancer of mediastinal origin. This oncologist connected with our oncologist here and affirmed the treatment plan and prognosis. We are going to MN for two days to meet with Mayo Clinic oncologist and plan to have Bowie’s surgery there.

Support….

It has been absolutely amazing to the boys and I to see how much we are loved… how ‘good’ people are in this world. From my beloved Colorado friends, my family in CA, my church, the Socialites Club, and friends from all over the world, we have been embraced with care and compassion. Anne Carlson leads the charge, and I cannot possibly thank her and her father Arne enough for what they’ve done for us at both UC Health and the Mayo respectively.

Are there needs? Yes. Bowie has good health insurance through his employer, but faces big out of pocket expenses for a 22yr old just starting out. I’m currently unemployed - a blessing for caring for caring for him, but stressful given the costs involved.

To those ends, friends have set up supportive pages to ease our journey. For Bowie’s costs there are two Go-Fund-Me pages.

From a colleague at work here: Fundraiser for Bowie Hutcheson by Elise Xiques : Support Bowie Hutcheson!

Another from his brothers in the Chi Psi Fraternity here: Fundraiser by Liam Baker : Help Bowie Raise Money For His Cancer Treatment

For supporting all of us, my friends set up a Meal Train Plus page allowing anyone anywhere to support Bowie, Nico, and me. Locals can sign up for providing meals to the three of us and anyone can provide donations or give a gift card. That site is located here: https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/21rdn5

IMPORTANT:  Do *not* donate to Caring Bridge.  That money goes straight to them.  Sneaky, isn’t it? 😡👿

It’s honestly hard for both Bowie and I to ask for help, but friends have recognized the needs and did that for us. God bless you… 🙏❤️

Newest Update

Journal entry by Pam Polizzotto

Bowie was rushed to ER Friday morning (had to call 911 and go by ambulance at instruction of cancer on-call doctor).  He was awakened early by sharp pain in his chest.  It was painful to breathe.  At hospital they took new scans and put him on morphine.  The scan showed growth of the chest tumor- it’s really impinging on his right lung.  Current size is 4.9” x 5.2” x 6.9”.  That’s a pretty big mass.  The ER doctor called Anschutz to see if this would change treatment plan - did they want him admitted, etc.  Answer came back as a No’ and his vitals looked good (most importantly oxygen above 90), so he was released with pain meds.

Since release it seems that Bowie’s been able to manage the pain when he doubles up on medication (as allowed by on-call doctor).  Unfortunately, this pain med makes him very nauseous and he threw up twice while we were traveling to/from Nico’s soccer game yesterday (once in the car!).  So now we’re adding anti-nausea meds to the mix.  😬

I sent out messages to Dr.  Costello at the Mayo Clinic as well as Dr. Kessler at Anchutz to make sure they were aware of the development .  I’ve. Kessler called me Friday night to assure me that this wasn’t necessary a bad turn… She pointed out that the comparison scan that ER was using to show ‘growth’ was actually from January and that we knew it had been growing since then already.  The more appropriate comparison would really be his more recent scan at the Mayo.  In that light, the change looks much smaller. (Mayo scan was 5.7” x 4.2” x 6.4”).  She also said they couldn’t get Bowie started on stem-cell replacement / high does chemo any sooner 5/23.  Impressively, Dr. Kessler related that she’d already spoken prior with Dr. McFarland about her aggressive treatment recommendations and he said he was fine either way.  She and Dr. Costello had also made contact over Bowie’s case, albeit briefly since he was out of office.  We’ll hear his full reaction and that of her Anschutz colleagues (the ‘tumor board’) this week, but she doesn’t anticipate any pushback.  All the scheduling details and current chemo decisions will also come out this week.

Although he has discomfort, Bowie feels it’s manageable enough for he and Alex to continue the plan to go up to Steamboat this week.  All still on track for him to have a ‘fun’ week.  Mercifully.

I’ll update closer to the start of stem-cell replacement therapy start.  Thank you so much for continuing prayers. 💜

With love and gratitude,
Pam
