Bowen’s Story

Site created on August 9, 2020

Bowen was born on July 2, 2020. For the first 5 weeks we struggled with failure to thrive. We really struggled with him gaining weight. We decided to do some lab tests and with that a red flag came up that landed is in the Rochester emergency room. There they found that he has MANY large kidney stones. 5 week old babies don’t get kidney stones. We stayed in Rochester for 5 days while they did tests upon tests. Unfortunately, we are still looking for a diagnosis. They believe it is most likely a genetic disorder but are not sure what.

We do now have a feeding plan in place that has finally been getting him to gain weight! 🙌

Journal entry by Lacey Spinler

Today seemed like a perfect day to write this post as it is what I am most thankful for this year. BOWEN IS STONE FREE!!!!

Honestly, it took me awhile to write this because it just seemed too good to be true! After a year of constant, gut wrenching worry and watching my little boy pass stone after stone after stone. (We found over 20 and we know there were more than that which were not found) Watching him moan and groan every night from the discomfort. It took me a little time for this miracle to sink in.
In September, Bowen had his big nephrology appointment. I had a pretty good feeling it was going to go well because after the last stone that he passed, he was different. He was more comfortable and sleeping better at night. His urine still had a strong odor but not nearly as bad as it had been.  But I was anxious to know for sure. He had an ultrasound, urinalysis, and blood collection. He did so good for all of them! Only cried for the blood collection but they were able to get it pretty quickly and he got to pick out another rubber duck. (There was a pig one….so guess which one came home with us 😂)  While we waited for the ultrasound appointment, I pushed Bowen around in a push car and he waved to everyone he passed. He is such a ham and definitely likes attention. He did wonderful for the ultrasound and then we waited for our appointment with Dr. Sas.

Dr. Sas came in and told us that he is stone free! It was such incredible news. I cried tears of joy for the next week! Dr. Sas literally threw up his arms and shrugged his shoulders and said he had no idea why and if you would have made him guess how this would turned out a year ago, he wouldn’t have guessed this. So, I cannot thank everyone who prayed enough. I know it is because of those prayers and God’s Grace that Bowen is stone free!

Bowen still has high calcium in his urine but Dr. Sas believes things should still continue to improve. We will have another appointment in a couple months and I am sure he will need regular checks for a long time. We also still have a genetic test that we are waiting results on. They are looking at every single one of Bowen’s, mine, and Alex’s genes. We are still praying for good results and that this whole thing was just a crazy fluke.

We might live during a crazy time but through this experience, I have seen how unbelievably kind and loving our community is. We received so much kindness from complete strangers. It absolutely blew us away and made us feel very loved. Thank you to everyone who prayed and supported us through this adventure.

Bowen is growing like crazy and is a full blown toddler! He loves to yell “mooooooommmmm” all day long and gets into everything!😂  Alex and I are so blessed to be his parents! ❤️
