Bill’s Story

Site created on April 6, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.  Bill started this journey about 7 years ago. He faced his demons and got sober, but found out his liver was damaged. It had several suspicious lesions, he started treatments, and worked hard and got better, and went fishing.  In July or August of last year we found out that those lesions were cancerous and growing. He started a type of chemo  immunotherapy and did amazingly well with it. Infusions every 3 weeks, definitely with a few side effects, but he kept going to work and church and fishing. In February , we celebrated his birthday and he got his turn with the nasty covid. That set him back. It looks like from the last 3 MRI's that there was some  gradual cirrhosis deterioration , maybe covid accelerated that. Recently he's had fluid build up in his abdomen extracted with nasty needles, In all 30 pounds. Currently, the cancer is stable but Bill is fighting the liver disease.  Fluid is under control now;  but he has lost significant weight and has to fight hard to eat. His bilirubin is up ,  which we have learned , effects his appetite and how food tastes. The cherry on top; he got another hernia while he thinks lifting at Target a few months ago. The fluid made that so much worse , plus the other 3 he's had repaired  all were very painful.
Thankfully that has improved. He is not in too much pain. He manages with tylenol if it gets bad. The cancer is still stable. He received his latest infusion last week, but were told there is not treatment for the cirrhosis. We are praying for time, rallying to gain some weight and get stronger.
Right now he spends his days in the brown chair the kids got him, resting , texting because his voice is very hoarse and weak, reading the trib,
choking down protein drinks, and listening to all of us trying to convince him to eat whatever tantalizing tidbits we offer.  Thankfully, He is sleeping pretty well, and  wants to keep fighting. Bill is a gentle, kind patient. Ultimately, as in everything God is control. We trust Him. He is always good.
