Newest Update

Journal entry by Cindy O'Donovan

Seems like there are new changes every month.  After 23 days at home, we had to move Dad to a Memory Care unit.  One of the hardest things I've ever done, but we just didn't see any other options and reluctantly decided as a family that moving him was the best thing we could do for him.  In the beautiful little rural area where he lived, there were not enough caregivers available to assist and it definitely takes more than one - or two, or even more - can do.  We moved him to a beautiful place in the Twin Cities, just 10 minutes away from my house, so it is much easier to get to see him.

He has virtually no short-term memory - although he is eating well and enjoys his food, he can't remember what he had to eat after leaving the table and we are not sure he remembers when people visit or call him.  But he always smiles when he sees us and remembers us - so it is those moments we treasure.  "Living in the moment" is truly a reality for us now.

At the suggestion of an Occupational Therapist, we've brought some photo albums and "memory books" filled with pictures and short captions about the people in them and he enjoys looking through them and can identify many of them by name.  PT and OT has been very helpful and he seems to have regained some strength and can use a walker - when he is prompted to grab it.  His lack of short-term memory affects his ability to know what to do and how to do it, so there is not much more they can do for him.

Not much more to say, but thank you again for all your caring thoughts, hopes and prayers for Dad and for us.
