Ben’s Story

Site created on November 13, 2018

After a weekend in Texas, Ben was headed home from the airport when he became nauseous. After entering onto I-35, he had to pull over and ended up vomiting blood on the side of the road. An ER visit turned into a hospital stay. After an endoscopic procedure it was determined he had a cancerous tumor at the junction of his esophagus and stomach. After further testing is was diagnosed as stage 2 esphogeal adenocarinoma. He will be at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis while he receives 6 weeks of aggressive chemo and radiation treatments. Following a successful treatment surgery will be needed to remove the tumor.

We’d like to update everyone on an overdue post. Ben had Ivor Lewis surgery on March 14, they ended up taking slightly more than anticipated, but it was all worth it! His surgeon was very optimistic and satisfied with what she was able to do and what she saw on the inside. Biopsies were sent to pathology and we were informed a couple days later that Ben was officially in remission, the cancer had been eradicated! After a 7 day post op hospital stay with some ups and downs we came home. It’s been a learning experience for Ben teaching himself how to eat again. He needs to eat 7-8 small meals a day, something he’s getting better at everyday along with recovering. On Tuesday, April 9th, Ben will be meeting with his oncologist to schedule his 2nd round of chemotherapy. It will be a 6 month process with 2 treatments per month. Although he’s in remission, this chemo will aid in any chance of a reoccurrence. He’s excited to get rolling on the chemo treatments and couldn’t have a better outlook now that surgery is behind him!
