*Thank you for visiting Becca’s caringbridge site. We hope this will keep family and friends up to date on Becca’s status. All of the  love, support, and prayers are greatly appreciated. *

Becca was diagnosed with the flu on Monday December 30. On Saturday she was not feeling any better and went to the ER. Her heart muscle was found to be extremely weakened requiring her to be sedated and placed on ECMO (a “bedside heart bypass” machine used to give her heart time to heal).

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kevin Van Batavia

Hello Everyone,
It's me, Becca, writing this post.  I have been meaning to post an update and thank you all for the many prayers, thoughts, and blessings throughout this ordeal. It's been a while since the last post, but I wanted and needed time to process everything that has happened. As you know, I was able to be released from the Rehab Unit to fly home and say goodbye to my dad.  It was physically and emotionally really hard, but I am so glad that I was able to see him before he passed away. I don't understand why my dad had to die so unexpectedly, but I am so very grateful for the timing of it. I am so happy and lucky that I was awake, cognitive, and medically stable enough to travel home and say goodbye.

Once we were back from my dad's funeral, we were looking forward to returning to a somewhat new normal.  The kids went back to school, and I started outpatient physical and occupational therapy twice a week.  I needed quite a bit of assistance with tasks like cooking, dressing, climbing stairs, and walking without a walker.  As the weeks passed, I began getting stronger and gained some of my independence back. I remember being so proud of myself for cooking a meal without having to take a break or being able to dress myself! I celebrated all of the little victories because I knew that with time, I could hopefully get back to my old self and my life before this all happened. I enjoyed being able to ride in the front seat again and especially loved being able to drive!

At my follow up doctor appointments with my Pulmonologist, Cardiologist, and Nephrologist, I would hear the same conversations over and over.  All of my doctors would tell me what a miracle I truly was and that they were so happy that I had pulled through.  My Pulmonologist saw me in the beginning of this when I was in the Emergency Room and my Cardiologist saved my life by sending me to the Heart Hospital that night. Although this news was and is still hard to hear, I am so grateful and thankful for being here with my family today! I am so thankful for all of you, and the many prayers that were said all over the country. I know that God answered these prayers and he healed me. Today, I am almost 80-90% back to myself.  I am still working towards gaining my strength back and I know that it will take time.  When I look back at a time when I struggled to sit up, stand on my own, or hold a 2 pound weight, I know that I have made great strides and it will come!

There have been some changes in the past few months, mainly due to the Corona Virus.  I stopped attending Physical Therapy in March since my lungs were still healing and my risk for complications were higher. And then the kids started staying home and had virtual learning. We have had lots of quality family time together! Kevin went back to work, and in true Navy fashion, he got orders for Pensacola, FL. We put our house on the Market in May and accepted an offer on the first day. We are busy these days trying to purge our stuff, say our goodbyes to this home and city that we've grown to love the past 4 1/2 years. We are hoping to get down to Pensacola soon and hopefully find a house with a little room to run and maybe even some farm animals or a much anticipated yellow lab puppy.

I know that my words can't even begin to express the amount of gratitude and appreciation I have for all of you who prayed for me, and my family. To those who helped by preparing meals or sending gift cards to restaurants or meal services. To those family and friends who helped with Ben and Amelia when Kevin and I couldn't.  To those friends and family who came to visit. To my preschool family who prayed, loved, and supported my family. To Kevin's squadron and spouses who helped be our wingman in a time of need. To all of those who took the time to read through the posts and offer support. To God for allowing me more time on Earth with my family.  THANK YOU!!!!
